RV Insurance

RV (recreational vehicle) insurance helps you insure your “home away from home” while you are traveling around the world or even out camping. RV insurance will give you peace of mind no matter where you go. RV insurance is very similar to auto insurance. RV insurance needs to have specialized insurance to remain properly covered on the road.   What is covered in RV insurance? As mentioned, you may find some of the same coverage offered by auto insurance are also available for RV insurance. Let’s go over the common coverages.
  • Liability: This is the coverage that will protect you in the event of an accident where you were found to be at fault. This coverage will cover any injuries to someone else; as well as any damage done to other property (up to your policy limit). This is arguably the most important coverage on your policy, especially since RV’s are such large vehicles and there is a lot of potential for some major damage to be done if something bad happens.
  • Uninsured/Underinsured Motorist: This coverage helps protect you from those people on the roadways who drive around without any insurance coverage, or if they carry low limits. This will ensure that if something happens and someone hits you that does not have any coverage you are not left holding the bag on paying for these damages out of pocket.
  • Comprehensive/Collision: These are going to be the exact same as a standard Auto policy.
    • Comprehensive: Coverage for things that you typically cannot control; Fire, Hail, Flood, Vandalism, Theft, etc.
    • Collision: Coverage to protect your RV from physical damage if you run into anything/anyone.
What if I live in my RV Full time?  For many retirees living in an RV full time is an option. You may need additional coverage that a RV policy doesn’t offer. However, a full-timers policy may offer protection if your RV is also your primary residence with the following coverages:
  • Personal liability: Liability coverage on a full-timers policy can protect you against liability claims, even while your RV is parked.
  • Medical payments: If someone hurts themselves in or around your RV, medical payments coverage may pay for their medical bills.
  • Loss assessment: Loss assessment coverage can pay for any fees charged for repairs by local associations.
There are many other coverage options such as:
  • Total loss replacement covers the cost of a new motorhome or travel trailer if yours is totaled, provided the vehicle is less than five years old. After that point, the coverage pays the amount specified on your policy.
  • Roadside assistance covers the cost of a tow if your battery dies, you get a flat tire, or break down for another reason.
  • Replacement cost/personal effects pays for the repair or replacement cost of your things if they're damaged in a covered event.
  • Emergency expenses pay up to $750 for hotel and travel costs if your RV breaks down more than 50 miles from home.
  • Pet coverage covers vet bills up to $1,000 if your four-legged friend is hurt in an accident.
  • Pest damage protection can help pay for repairs when a wild animal like a bird or raccoon damages your RV.
  • Roof Protection Plus® can pay to replace or repair the damaged roof of your motorhome, even if the damage is the result of normal wear and tear.
What impacts the cost of RV insurance? The cost of an RV insurance policy can vary due to the scope of RV types and classes, along with many more factors such as:
  • Type of RV -The largest type of RV, the class A motorhome, typically costs more for RV insurance than the smaller class C motorhome and class B camper van.
  • Age.
  • Location -RV insurance rates depend on your state, region, and ZIP code.
  • Usage -If your RV is your permanent residence (you live in it six or more months out of the year), you may need to purchase additional coverages that protect you the same way a homeowners insurance policy would, including personal liability, medical payments, and loss assessment coverage.
