Insurance companies can be selective about which type of animals are acceptable. When choosing homeowner insurance, it is also important to think about you and your furry family members being covered in the event of a liability claim. In fact, the Insurance Information Institute (Triple-i) estimated about 85 million dogs live in roughly 69 million households.
What is Animal Liability
Animal Liability is coverage that will protect you in the event of damage or injuries caused by your dog or other pet you own. In any homeowner insurance policy, there is coverage for Liability up to a certain limit. If the insured has $100,000 in liability that can be used to pay for a lawyer, court fees, settlement, etc.
For example, Peter and his 5-year-old son Ivan are visiting his friend Sam at her home. Ivan is playing with Sam’s Golden Retriever and the dog jumps up due to excitement and scratches Ivan face. Ivan’s scratched face gets infected, and he must be hospitalized. Peter then sues his friend Sam for $35,000 for medical bills along with pain and suffering for Ivan. Sam’s home insurance company will pay out the $35,000 for him.
